LS4FUTURE Workshop on AI in Science

" "

In response to the evolving needs of the LS4FUTURE community and the rapid advancements in science and technology, the Coordination Office is pleased to invite our entire community to the upcoming “AI in Science” Workshop.

This event is designed to provide researchers with foundational tools and practical insights into how artificial intelligence (AI) can support and enhance their scientific work.

Acknowledging the interdisciplinary nature of the LS4FUTURE consortium, the workshop will focus on real-world applications of AI across three key areas in our institutions: Data Analysis, Writing, and Imaging, with each section offering tailored case studies and curated tools suitable for researchers at all career stages (read below for more information).

The 3-hour workshop has been structured to be both accessible and hands-on. It will be delivered in a hybrid format and, to enrich the learning experience, presentations, websites and accesible videos will be made available to all registered participants.

DATA ANALYSIS

Developing a machine learning model for predicting metastasis progression in breast cancer patients

This session will present a case study combining multimodal datasets, including clinical and genomics data, using machine learning to develop a prognosis model for metastatic breast cancer.

Session led by Dr. João Carlos Guimarães (Faculty of Medicine, Universidade de Lisboa – FMUL). Engineer in Systems and Informatics, with a PhD in Artificial Intelligence.

WRITING TOOLS

Enhancing Scientific Writing with Large Language Models (LLMs)

Large language models are revolutionizing how we work, think, and write. This section will show how to effectively leverage AI to support scientific writing, from drafting and editing, to figure creation. Topics will include how these models work, key DOs and DON’Ts, real-world examples, and privacy-conscious usage.

This session will be led by Dr. Bruno Saraiva (ITQB NOVA). Biochemist with an MSc in Biochemistry and a PhD in Molecular Biosciences.

IMAGE ENHANCING

AI-enhanced microscopy imaging

This session will introduce AI in microscopy imaging in practical terms, focusing on the possibilities offered by open-source and user-friendly tools. Participants will learn how to transform their microscopy-driven research with AI and gain insights into common challenges and pitfalls. A list of resources will be provided to help adopt or refine AI-powered approaches.

Session led by Dr. Estíbaliz Gómez (ITQB NOVA). Mathematician with a MSc in Statistical and Computational Data Processing, and a PhD in Mathematical Engineering.

This event is open to LS4FUTURE members, and registration is free but mandatory. Due to space limitations we suggest you to register as soon as possible.

Please REGISTER here.

Registrations will be closed on August 28th. Confirmation of participation will be sent on September 1st.

Please contact the LS4FUTURE Coordination Office (ls4future@ls4future.pt) for further information or clarification.
