LS4FUTURE, in collaboration with iNOVA4Health Research Unit, are pleased to announce that registrations are now open for our two‑day course CLEAR AND COMPELLING SCIENTIFIC WRITING, designed for researchers in the life sciences. Over two intensive days, this hands-on training will focus on practical techniques to make your manuscripts clearer, more engaging, and more persuasive. Being able to articulate your ideas convincingly is essential not only for publishing but also for securing grants, presenting at conferences, and building a strong academic profile.

In today’s publishing environment, where journals receive far more submissions than they can publish, strong science alone is not enough. Reviewers read dozens of submissions, and the texts that stand out are those that are both well‑structured and compelling. Writing that guides the reader smoothly, sparks interest, and highlights the significance of your findings increases the likelihood that reviewers will stay engaged and view your work as worth publishing, or funding.

Strong scientific writing is also a strategic advantage for career progression. Well‑crafted papers and proposals improve acceptance rates, strengthen your scientific narrative, and open doors to collaboration, grants, and international visibility. Being able to communicate your ideas convincingly is one of the most influential skills in a competitive academic landscape.

iNOVA4Health and rest of LS4FUTURE partners invite PhD candidates, postdocs, and researchers at all levels to join this training and elevate their writing to a level that is clear, persuasive, and impactful.

WHEN:

2 full days: 22 & 23 October, from 09:30 to 17:30. Lunch won’t be provided, but there is a canteen, as well as fridges and microwaves available in case you prefer to bring your own food.

WHERE:

ITQB NOVA (Oeiras). Classroom 3.20.

The course provides practical know-how needed to write well-structured, convincing and easy-to-read scientific texts in the STEM research fields.

The program has two main parts:

– The first one is focused on the macrostructure & storytelling of scientific texts, especially research articles.

– The second part deals with paragraphs, sentences, language & style.

In addition, the training will address the role of AI tools in scientific writing, providing practical guidance on their effective and responsible use across different stages of the writing process.

To enable maximum possible transfer of learned skills, the trainer will employ interactive and collaborative methods including exercises, text analysis, reflections and discussions with the group and in pairs. Participants will practice the acquired knowledge with provided exercises as well as analyzing a research article from their field.

COURSE CONTENTS

How to build a strong storyline for your research article.
How to write compelling Titles and strong Astracts.
How to structure the Introduction and Discussion sections.
Understanding readers’ expectations and using the reader’s perspective to communicate your research findings effectively.
Improve paragraph and sentence flow: the key to easy-to-read texts, and create a logical flow in your writing.
Write more celarly and concisely, scientific language & style: further methods to improve the readability of your texts (e.g., active vs. passive voice, the importance of action verbs and more).
Use AI tools effectively and responsibly throughout the writing process

TRAINING PROVIDER

The course will be provided by Dr. Martina Michalikova, writing consultant and the writing trainer behind Writing Scientist, based in Berlin (Germany).

Dr. Martina Michalikova has a background in Biology and Computational Neuroscience. After she finished her doctoral thesis, Martina obtained further qualification as a writing consultant and developed her own systematic approach specifically tailored to the needs of researchers in natural & life sciences and other STEM fields. Since 2017 she is leading workshops and writing retreats in Germany, other European countries, and online. Martina’s method allows researchers write better texts faster and without suffering, by optimizing text quality as well as the writing process itself.
